Singin’ In The Rain is considering to be one of the greatest movie musicals of all time, with two particularly brilliant, innovative sequences…Gene Kelly’s classic title song sequence that uses rain as a prop, and Donald O’Connor’s hilarious, surprising ‘Make ‘em Laugh’. In addition to being innovative, this movie is in many ways ABOUT innovation…about the advent of talkies and the way people adapt to new things.

Helping others understand a concept, especcially one that is amorphous and complex, is a common challenge that we face. Here is an innovative way in which a school teacher helped her students understand the impact of bullying.
Paula - A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stamp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty is was. She then told them to tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bully’s another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home.

Though his name doesn’t often come up as a major innovator in the entertainment industry, Fred Astaire was undoubtedly one of film’s greatest influencers. He introduced several innovations in the production of musicals, including the use of a single camera to film dance sequences in a wide shot, rather than several cameras moving with the performers. He also insisted that all dance numbers be integrated into the storyline of the film rather than used as standalone pieces, the way they had been in the past. He constantly pushed the boundaries of what was possible, and challenged the status quo.

This is an interesting article that challenges the claim that all the simple things have already been invented, and that innovation is becoming harder and harder.
